Name: Herb Knoke
Submitted by David Deutsch
- Herb Knoke was a long-time golfer and volunteer at Hiawatha. After surviving a heart attack and then retiring from the Minneapolis Fire Department, he volunteered each morning to bring the carts up from the cart barn that once was located close to the 14th green. He worked as Starter for the junior golfers that played each Monday and Friday morning since we played for only $1.80 if we teed off before 8:00am. He helped me get started playing golf at Hiawatha by picking me up in front of my house early each Monday and Friday morning so his son Rocky and I could play. Herb was also my Bantam hockey coach, and positively influenced many young men to play golf and hockey. I fondly remember Coach Knoke for the kind and caring man that he was.

Name: Robert Kelly
Submitted by Kathryn Kelly
- My dad, Robert Kelly, grew up on the east side of Lake Nokomis in the 1920's and 1930's. He and his buddies spent many hours in the Nokomis and Hiawatha parks. This included golfing at Hiawatha Golf Course once it was opened, playing tennis on the many tennis courts in the parks, swimming at Lake Nokomis and Lake Hiawatha, and ice-boating on Lake Nokomis. We even have family movies of him and his buddies playing tennis on the court across from the current Lake Nokomis Community building and ice-boating on Lake Nokomis. In adulthood, he bought 2 homes, the first across from the 4th hole at Hiawatha Golf Course, and the second across from the 6th hole on Hiawatha Golf Course.
